Empowering ourselves to get our needs met….

When was the last time you said, “This is what I need, or this is what I want” point-blank to someone who was requesting something other than what you needed or wanted?  Most of us back away from our needs and wants and choose to do whatever is being requested.  There are a lot of conscious or conscious beliefs which lead us to act this way, such as:

  •  our needs are not important
  •  we must take care of other people’s needs before our own
  • we must take care of our children, siblings, spouses…. and we come last
  •  if after everything gets done, then I can have what I want
  • it is too much, etc….

If we don’t empower ourselves to say we deserve, we need and we want, no one else will do it for us.  It is important to know you count, you matter and you have a say in what you need, want or deserve.  Give up the leftovers, make yourself a priority, if you put yourself first others will too.  The next time someone says, I need you to do something… check in with yourself and say does this meet my needs.  If not, empower yourself to say “NO, sorry I can’t do that for you now…”  You may feel like you are letting the person down, but better to let someone else down than yourself!
